THE LAST DAYS

A Film by James Moll

James Moll's documentary film ''The Last Days,'' a concise, devastating history of the Nazis' decimation of Hungary's Jewish population during the final days of World War II, offers a ghastly, inverse kind of reassurance. It reminds us that yes, there are still images and stories of human cruelty and degradation that we can never get used to, that we shouldn't get used to, no matter how intensely the mass media have flooded us with pictures of human nature at its vilest.

THE PASSIONATE PURSUITS OF ANGELA BOWEN

A Film by Jennifer Abod

Passionate Pursuits provides a window into the life of Angela Bowen who grew up in inner city Boston during the Jim Crow era, and went on to become a classical ballerina, a legendary dance teacher, a black lesbian feminist activist organizer, writer and professor.

For six decades Bowen has influenced and inspired untold numbers, speaking out as strongly for the Arts and Black and Women’s Rights as she has for LGBT Rights.  Bowen’s stories reveal how she managed to be her authentic self, and how race, class, gender, age, and sexuality played into her decisions and strategies for survival.

What Angela Bowen has accomplished in 60 years in various fields most won’t accomplish even after a lifetime of dedication to one particular area. She’s a woman of many loves and each has left its mark on society at large.

PASSIONATE PURSUITS is important to anyone who wants to know more about black women’s lives and the emergence of Black Feminism. The film challenges and inspires diverse audiences to pursue their own dreams with tenacity and courage, for themselves, for their communities and the world.

WHITE LIKE ME

Race, Racism, & White Privilege in America

A Film by Scott Morris

White Like Me, based on the work of anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise, explores race and racism in the US through the lens of whiteness and white privilege. In a stunning reassessment of the American ideal of meritocracy and claims that we've entered a post-racial society, Wise offers a fascinating look back at the race-based white entitlement programs that built the American middle class, and argues that our failure as a society to come to terms with this legacy of white privilege continues to perpetuate racial inequality and race-driven political resentments today. Features author Michelle Alexander, Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree, legal scholar Imani Perry and others.

Do The Math: A Movie To Spark A Movement

A film by Kelly Nyks and Jared P. Scott

It's simple math: we can emit 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2 degrees Celsius of warming--anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth.  The problem? Burning the fossil fuel that corporations now have in their reserves would result in emitting 2,795 gigatons of carbon dioxide--5 times the safe amount.  This film features  350.org founder Bill McKibben.  The safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 350 parts per million.  We are currently at 400 parts per million.

OCCUPY LOVE

A Film by Velcrow Ripper

Occupy Love explores the growing realization that the dominant system of power is failing to provide us with health, happiness or meaning.  The old paradigm that concentrates wealth, founded on the greed of the few, is causing economic and ecological collapse.  The resulting crisis has become the catalyst for a profound awakening: millions of people are deciding that enough is enough - the time has come to create a new world, a world that works for all life.  The film connects the dots in this era of rapidly evolving social change, featuring scenes from the Egyptian Revolution, the indignado uprising in Spain, Occupy Wall Street in New York, indigenous activists at the Alberta Tar Sands, the climate justice movement and beyond.  Includes some of the world's key visionaries such as Bill McKibben, Jeremy Rifkin, bell hooks and Charles Einstein.    (2012  -  Running Time: 84 minutes)

MAD COWBOY

Directed by Michael Tobias

Howard Lyman's testimony on The Oprah Winfrey Show revealed the deadly impact of the livestock industry on our well-being. It not only led to Oprah's declaration that she'd never eat a burger again, it sent shock waves through a concerned and vulnerable public.  A fourth-generation Montana rancher, Lyman investigated the use of chemicals in agriculture after developing a spinal tumor that nearly paralyzed him. Now a vegan, he blasts through the propaganda of beef and dairy interests -- and the government agencies that protect them -- to expose an animal-based diet as the primary cause of cancer, heart disease, and obesity in this country. He warns that the livestock industry is repeating the mistakes that led to Mad Cow disease in England while simultaneously causing serious damage to the environment.  Persuasive, straightforward, and full of the down-home good humor and optimism of a son of the soil, Mad Cowboy is both an inspirational story of personal transformation and a convincing call to action for a plant-based diet -- for the good of the planet and the health of us all.

ISRAEL vs ISRAEL

 A Film by Terje Carlsson

Israel vs. Israel is a documentary about Jewish peace activists who face skepticism and criticism from their fellow Israeli citizens. A Rabbi, a soldier, a grandmother and an anarchist- four very different Israelis who share a common goal: to achieve peace in the Middle East and end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories. Undeterred, they promote a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in order to improve the lives of Palestinians and their fellow countrymen alike. Using in depth interviews and dynamic footage to narrate their inspiring stories, Israel vs. Israel provides a unique perspective on the struggle to find a peaceful solution of this decades-long conflict.  Just as American citizens felt it was their duty to protest the U.S. government's war on Iraq and in Afghanistan, so it is with their Israeli counterparts speaking out against the Israeli government's policies regarding Palestine.  In both cases, they have often been accused of being "unpatriotic" for "speaking out against the homeland".  What else is new? See this absorbing documentary about people putting themselves on the line for their Palestinian brothers and sisters, and to restore the true honor of the Israeli state. "Not in our name" indeed.

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER:  Peace Activist LUBNA HAMMAD

An emotional march from past to present, Dare Not Walk Alone combines rarely seen news footage from 1964 with present day testimony to tell the true story of troubled times in the historic tourist town of St. Augustine, Florida.  The film covers the historic efforts of civil rights activists in St. Augustine to desegregate the Monson Motor Lodge swimming pool.  This helped lead to the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  This movie also documents the systemic poverty and racism still found in St. Augustine, a mirror image  of the same problems that led to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.  Please join us as we stand in solidarity with the family of Michael Brown and the people of Ferguson, Missouri.

WAR MADE EASY:

How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death

Narrated by Sean Penn and based on the work of media critic and best-selling author Norman Solomon, who traveled with Penn to Baghdad just before the war to call attention to the dangers of a U.S. invasion, WAR MADE EASY reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose 50 years of government spin and media collusion that has dragged our country into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. With remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, the documentary exposes how presidential administrations of both parties have relied on a combination of deception and media complicity to sell one war after another to the American people.

"THE NATURE OF EXISTENCE"

A film by Roger Nygard

Mysteries of human existence – Explained in one movie!

What if you asked the religious experts, gurus, scientists, and everyday people of the world why we exist? Why are we here, and what are we supposed to do about it? What started the Universe, and was it a mistake? Does God exist, and why does he seem so interested in our sex lives? After exploring the phenomenon of Trekkies, filmmaker Roger Nygard took on The Nature of Existence. Nygard wrote down the toughest 85 questions he could think of, roamed the globe to the source of each of the world’s philosophies, religions, and belief systems, and interviewed people who have influenced, inspired, or freaked out humanity. His travels highlight the words of such luminary figures as Indian holy man Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (The Art of Living), evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Chinese Taoist Master Zhang Chengda, Stanford physicist Leonard Susskind (co-discoverer of string theory), wrestler Rob Adonis (founder of Ultimate Christian Wrestling), confrontational evangelist Brother Jed Smock, novelist Orson Scott Card (Ender’s Game), director Irvin Kershner (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back), Stonehenge Druids Rollo Maughfling & King Arthur Pendragon and many more....

PEACEABLE KINGDOM:  The Journey Home

Director: Jenny Stein

A riveting story of transformation and healing, PEACEABLE KINGDOM: THE JOURNEY HOME explores the awakening conscience of several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now come to question the basic assumptions of their way of life.

Presented through a woven tapestry of memories, music, and breathtaking accounts of life-altering moments, the film provides insight into the farmers' sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also making clear the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led them to their present dilemma.  Interwoven with the farmers' stories is the dramatic animal rescue work of a newly-trained humane police officer whose sense of justice puts her at odds with the law she is charged to uphold.

With strikingly honest interviews and rare footage demonstrating the emotional lives and intense family bonds of animals most often viewed as living commodities, this groundbreaking documentary shatters stereotypical notions of farmers, farm life, and perhaps most surprisingly, farm animals themselves.

ESCAPE FROM AFFLUENZA

A film by John de Graaf

Do you remember the 90s? Bill Clinton was President and the economic boom was in full swing. A clever advertising campaign for a perfume brand led to people painting their doors red. Amid all this affluence, people were finding (once again) that money doesn't make you happy, and were adopting voluntary simplicity to improve their lives and reduce their negative impact on the planet. Now, as we face dire economic times, people are being forced to scale down and make changes in their spending habits. Are there similarities, and what can we learn from buying less things and making wiser use of our time? Escape From Affluenza was made in a different time, but is relevant again today. This movie shows how some Americans are declaring their independence from stuff!

Featured Speaker: Donna Marykwas, Ph.D., founder and executive director of Long Beach Grows, whose mission is to promote green, healthy, sustainable urban agriculture in Long Beach, CA.  Donna will be speaking about this aspect as it relates to simplifying and improving quality of life by growing, and harvesting food grown by people in the community working together.

WHY IN THE WORLD ARE THEY SPRAYING?
a film by Michael Murphy and Barry Kolsky

"Why in the World are They Spraying?" is an investigative documentary into one of the many hidden agendas associated with chemtrail/geo-engineering programs. Various groups are quietly pursuing these programs, but why and for whose gain?  This documentary explains how the aerosols being sprayed into our sky are used in conjunction with other technologies to control our weather.  Geo-engineers maintain that their models are only for the mitigation of global warming.  What is clear is that the chemtrail/geo-engineering can be used as a way to consolidate an enormous amount of both monetary and political power into the hands of the technocratic elites.  Certain international corporations can now leverage weather control to gain power over the Earth’s natural systems.  This of course, is being done at the expense of every living thing on the planet.  "Why In The World are They Spraying?" is a must see film and will revolutionize the environmental movement.

Vanishing Of The Bees

a film by George Langworthy and Maryam Henein

Honeybees ave been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives.  Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon threatens the loss of much more than honey as we depend on honeybees to pollinate one third of the food on our tables. Vanishing of the Bees chronicles the innermost thoughts and feelings of beekeepers and scientists as they fight to preserve the honeybee and make it through another day.

Featuring experts like author Michael Pollan, the film also presents a platform of solutions, encouraging audiences to be the change they want to see in the world. This award-winning documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between Humankind and Mother Earth.

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS: Henry Kurland, President of Long Beach Beekeepers and Barbara Sinclair. They will bring an observation hive and honey sticks will be available for sale to support Long Beach Beekeepers.

Never Turn Back:
The Life of Fannie Lou Hamer

a film by Bill Buckley & Tracy Sugarman

Join us as we celebrate Black History Month by honoring the incredible life of Fannie Lou Hamer.  Ms. Hamer was instrumental in organizing the Freedom Summer in Mississippi in 1964.  Its main objective was to register black voters in Mississippi. Although Freedom Summer was met with terrible violence, Ms. Hamer helped to create the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and establish a network of Freedom Schools that taught Black History and Constitutional rights. Known for singing Christian hymns to inspire the people, this film includes footage of Ms. Hamer singing the famous song, "This Little Light of Mine".  Join us as we celebrate this Light of the Civil Rights Movement!  Group discussion follows the movie.

SPECIAL GUEST PERFORMANCE by MICHEAUX FORTSON aka spoken word artist, "URBAN VOODOO".  "URBAN VOODOO would be known as the "Awakening Angel", awakening the consciousness of the most neglected portions of the black mind. In a generation that is heavily immersed in beat-driven misogyny and non-progressive jester-ism (did I say that out loud?!), UV comes as a loud and outspoken voice as necessary as fresh air in a smoke-filled room."

***FREE RAFFLE***
"AMERICAN BLACKOUT" (DVD)  This powerful movie documents suppression of the black vote in Florida and Ohio for the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections.

Special Guest Speaker Dana Saifan will present her insights into the situation in Palestine and Israel, followed by Q&A, and group discussion. Dana Saifan is a third year undergraduate student studying psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the president of Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA and is a member of the National Students for Justice in Palestine ad-hoc steering committee.

American Blackout
a film by Ian Inaba

We have all heard how George W. Bush stole the presidential elections in 2000 and 2004.  How did he do it, and who helped him?  Why did the African American communities in Florida and Ohio claim to be disenfranchised during those elections?  This documentary answers these questions, as well as covering how the Republican Party disrupted the political career of former Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, a black woman who asked tough questions of Bush and Cheney when she was a member of Congress.  We are just days away from election 2012.  Please join us to see this important documentary.

GENETIC ROULETTE
The Gamble of Our Lives

A Film by bestselling author Jeffrey Smith

Never before seen evidence points to genetically engineered foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the U.S. population, especially among children. Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans, pets, livestock and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn. Monsanto's strong arm tactics, the FDA's fraudulent policies, and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency are also laid bare. This sometimes shocking film may change your diet, help you protect your family, and accelerate the consumer tipping point against genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
